The last thing Gitane Mayfair did before disappearing mysteriously was to forbid her niece Pallas Greene from following 'artistic pursuits' - a rule which Pallas, in the grand tradition of all teenagers, promptly ignored. When Pallas finds out that she has inherited Gitane's vast estate, she returns to the House of Mayfair and discovers the reason for her aunt's strange rule.
