The idea of vast alien spacecraft floating over major cities comes from the 1953 novel by Arthur C. Clarke. In his introduction to the 1989 edition, he explains that it was inspired by the sun glinting off of a group of balloons over London during World War Two. The idea was later borrowed by other science fiction dramatizations, notably V - Die Besucher (2009) and Independence Day (1996).

Arthur C. Clarke is the only Sci-Fi writer to have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and is also known for his collaboration with Stanley Kubrick on 2001: Odyssee im Weltraum (1968).

Filming at The Royal Exhibition Building, a World Heritage Site-listed building in Nicholson St, Carlton, Victoria, Australia.

I don't know where this show is going, having only seen the first episode, but I am pretty philosophical when it comes to books to movies. I read Childhood's End back when I used to read as many as ten science fiction books a week. Arthur C. Clarke was always a cut above most at that time. I love this book, but I also know that seldom do these people follow the plot. For the first episode, it didn't bother me that an articulate farmer became the go-to guy from the overlords. There were great liberties taken, and, yet, it's still quite entertaining. I don't know what the people of earth would do if faced with a group of benevolent aliens who take their competitiveness away from them by giving them everything. I'm quite aware of what is happening with the kids, so I will look to see how faithful their role is to be. If they screw with the ending too much, I might have more to say.

so first of all, maybe this is an entertaining show if you haven't read the book. but you know, it's my all time favourite novel, and i was so excited that finally they made an adaptation of it. and i saw the ratings so i really thought that its gonna be at least all right. but after the first episode i have to say that there is nothing common with the book except that there is an alien called karellen, and a human called stormgren (they even changed his nationality). so i could write for hours what doesn't make any sense in this episode (dead people appear and talking, stormgren is a farmer, so no one takes him seriously, the overlords are threatening him at least twice, they don't prevent death, they reverse it, and they just kinda force everything without ppl believing them, and they are red plz why etc etc) but instead i ask, why American producers have to make everything so American? sorry to say that, its not personal, i don't have any problems with you guys in life. but you have like a perfect plot and then just "hey what a good idea, lets put more guns, violence, dead relatives, love-triangles-with-dead-people in it, why not??!!" it is just that iam really disappointed
