Big Ideas for Little Kids
Aesthetics, Metaphysics and Ethics are not usually considered part of a second grade curriculum This documentary explores a most surprising journey. It accompanies a group of Mount Holyoke College students under the guidance of Philosophy Professor Thomas Wartenberg and President Lynn Pasquerella as the students prepare for and lead a series of philosophy classes for six- and seven-year-olds in a local public school. These young students are introduced to a variety of topics in philosophy through the simple but profound vehicle of the children's picture book. They learn that books go way beyond a title and synopsis, and become engaged in critical discussions of topics that they have very strong views on. The students learn some of the basic rules for having a philosophical discussion, from what it means to be a good listener who is respectful despite differences, to how to build a good argument when making a point.
